HOUSING DEPARTMENT

LEAD BASED PAINT REDUCTION PROGRAM

ABOUT THE PROGRAM

Are you worried about lead paint in your home? Lead dust or paint chips can poison children, slow their growth and development, and have permanent damage.

Houses built before 1978 can have lead paint, especially houses built in the 1950’s and earlier. Babies and kids who live in houses with chipping, peeling, or flaking lead paint can become poised with lead. Chipping or peeling lead paint becomes household dust. Dust gets on their hands and toys, and then they put their hands and toys in their mouths. Or sometimes kids eat paint chips or chew on painted windowsills and get lead in their bodies.

SEIRPC can help. In 2024, SEIRPC received a grant from HUD that pays for a lead paint inspection. If the inspection identifies hazards, the grant will pay to remove or fix the lead paint, and to clean the lead dust from the home.
